digging into neuro.architecture

Clever classrooms, how does it sound you? Are we getting clever in these classrooms or classrooms are designed cleverly to enhance learning? Well actually it is pretty much both. The relationship between learning and building is kind of subtile because it is always found out to be challenging to distinguish the "physical environemnt" factor, as there can be many other factors on a individuals learning. Take the location of the school, background of the students, and teachers… However a very broad study conducted by University of Stanford is put on tabe where they accomplished a very comprehensive study on 27 schools located on different locations in UK and schools hosting kids with blended socioeconomic backgrounds. I read the research paper and I am pretty much convinced that with expanded gathered information from similar scenariols, the findings are very interesting and convincing. Remember that me and Kristina Sahlqvist from HDK were working on a research design project for ICU units collobrating with neuroarchitecture? Kristina Sahlqvist led an interdisciplinary research project focusing on improving hospital environments for rehabilitation and since we had close contact since thesis i stepped in project helping with research part. The project involved experts from various fields and resulted in a conceptual solution for an optimal rehabilitation ward. The design included a central space for patients and families to cook and eat together, creating a more normal hospital experience. Sahlqvist has also previously collaborated on an artistic development project, incorporating redesigned furniture, smart textiles, and sensory elements. I have been taking distance course called Environmental Perception at SLU, Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet and we have this book as course literature. Although there are three chapters valid for the course, i think overall the book is quite interesting for ones who wants to read how our behaviors get effected in the environments we are in. It is not only the natural environment - as you might get a wring picture from book cover - but it is focusing on different environments from the closest to the far. The chapters vary on home environments, work- learning environments and the surroundings, even goes up to larger scales to the cities we live in.  I haven´t came up that far yet, but so far it is quite interesting.  Although it has one full chapter of learning environments, you can find various information on factors that effect learning in different chapters - such as, temperature, light etc..   apparently the book had been published a lot, that you might get it f...

new course !

I applied to this course recently "Hjärna och beteende" in Uppsala University. In English it will be Brain and behavior. I woul like to learn about brain more, simply brain and its motivations beneath, before taking an action, This way i can contat to architecture myself. Hard to pronounce hard to explain maybe, but this technology aims to make things easy. Being used in medicine, brain monitoring system, is slowly used in test studies in architecture, and as far as i read it is spreading outside the core city of neuroscience-architecture, San Diego. I came across to studies made in University of Lisboa "Evaluating Emotional Responses to the Interior Design of a Hospital Room: A Study Using Virtual Reality". It really raises curiosity if they have been looking into this connection and to mention that it the resarch is done by Interdisciplinary center for the study of Human Performance (CIPER). The thesis can be purchased on web, but unfortunately the department webpage is not active.
